Martha Fleming and Lyne Lapointe worked in collaboration, based in Montreal, creating site-specific installations from 1982 to 1997. They reclaimed abandoned buildings and invited viewers to question the assumptions of authority and progress that are tied to public architecture. Champs was produced in 1993 for the installation Matiere Premiere at Les Anciennes Archives de la Seine in Paris, a project that went unrealized when the building was unexpectedly demolished. In this piece, the transparency of the glass literally collapses the space between the figure painted on one side and the objects, primarily archaeological relics, painted on the other. The title, French for "fields," refers to the multiple intersecting fields of perception, the natural world and material culture, which together shape our experience. |
