Kelly Mark, a graduate of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, is a Canadian artist with a growing national and international reputation. She makes use of the familiar strategies of Minimalism and Conceptualism. This early performative piece captures some of the key aspects of Mark's subsequent career, including wry humour, use of ordinary, everyday materials, and systematic repetition. In 1000 Hemlock Hits, Mark attached handles to two wooden beams and enlisted two male art students to bash them together 1000 times. She counted off each hit while recording the process. The installation is emblematic of the nature of persistence, the flow of opposing wills, and the stubborn facts of the material world. (Linked to 41-014.02, video)
