Documents in Time: The Landscape Photography of Preston Schiedel
Frances K. Smith Gallery
17 April - 4 July
The Art Centre’s first presentation of recently acquired works by highly regarded Kingston photographer Preston Schiedel, Documents in Time features landscape images documenting trajectories of human use and neglect within Kingston and the surrounding area. Taken between 2000 and 2006, these black and white photographs from the Where the Waters Meet series draw attention to the intersection of the long history of a site and the singular moment encapsulated in the photograph. Schiedel depicts change, such as the migration of gas stations from the city centre or shifting patterns of recreation, through the particular and the familiar. His use of a large format Banquet camera lends these prints a signature velvety visual texture of intense detail. Schiedel’s canny deployment of subdued atmospheric light and precise composition evokes a sense of abandonment, drawing the viewer into contemplation of the ways in which time impacts the built landscape.
