Propitious Moments: Selections from the Heritage Quilt Collection
Fraser Elliott Gallery
19 April - 10 August 2008
Quilt-making has its origins in the production of bed coverings. However, through the symbolism of design, quilts have often been created to express meanings and to mark important occasions. Such symbolism can be found in work as personal as the traditional 'marriage quilt' that young women in 19th century Canada were expected to produce in the period between their betrothal and their wedding. Or, it can be seen in artwork as public and international as the Millennium Quilt: Maple Leaves in Autumn created in 2000 by the Kingston Heirloom Quilters along with five other quilting groups in different parts of the world as participants in an international round robin quilt project. This exhibition is an invitation to view some spectacular quilts spanning 140 years of the quilt-maker's art.
On Saturday, 19 April at 2 pm a public reception was held marking the exhibition's opening.
