Mister Man
R. Fraser Elliott Gallery
5 August 2006 - 8 April 2007
Mister Man explored unexpected and, at times, provocative considerations of masculinity as represented in contemporary Canadian sculpture from the Art Centre collection. Works by Rebecca Belmore, Joe Fafard, General Idea, Victor Tolgesy and Alex Wyse staged aspects of male experience from the fantastic to the droll, infused with feeling from flamboyant affirmation to deep vulnerability. Rebecca Belmore's Mister Luna (2001), for example, was an homage, complete with vanity lights, to renowned performance artist James Luna. Victor Tolgesy's figural Acrobat Performing the Stunt of His Life (1979) offered a poignant, satirical play on male bravado.
This exhibition was curated by Michelle Veitch as part of a practicum course in the graduate program of the Queen's University Department of Art. She gave a talk in the gallery as part of our Art Matters series on Thursday 28 September at 12:15 pm.
