Études: The Dorothy M. L. Burke Bequest
Samuel J. Zacks Gallery
2 July - 27 August 2006
Études presents for the first time an exquisite collection of eight artworks by artists whose names resonate in the annals of Canadian art history, such as James W. Morrice (1865-1924), Clarence Gagnon (1881-1942), Maurice Cullen (1866-1934) and Marc-Aurèle Suzor-Coté (1869-1937). Although small in scale, the seven oil sketches and one etching in this bequest are large in terms of aesthetic quality and charm. All were painted in the late-19th or early-20th centuries and express a sensibility for quiet beauty that is rare in our hectic lives today.
Dorothy M. L. Burke bequeathed this collection to the Art Centre in memory of her brother Dr. Desmond T. Burke, who was a graduate of Queen's University (Science '26 and Medicine '32), successful radiologist, and member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame for his rifle marksmanship.
