Looking Back: Some Artists Who Have Worked in Kingston
Historical Feature Gallery
17 July 2005 - 2 April 2006
Looking Back presents a selection of paintings by artists from Kingston's past who worked in the region either as permanent residents or as brief visitors. The exhibition singles out those artists who are recognized within the narrative of Canadian art as well as some who distinguished themselves regionally. As such, the exhibition can be viewed as a microcosm of the history of Canadian art.
The exhibition includes topographical sketches by British military officers who were stationed in British North America in the 19th century, such as Colonel James Pattison Cockburn, and early itinerant painters-for-hire who briefly visited Kingston seeking portrait commissions. 19th-century artists resident in the region, William Sawyer and Daniel Fowler, are represented, as are a number of important artists of the 20th century including André Biéler, Grant Macdonald, Lilias Torrance Newton, Goodridge Roberts and Frederick Varley.
