Isabelle Hayeur: Verge

Contemporary Feature Gallery
2 July - 11 September 2005

In the terrain of her impossible landscapes, Isabelle Hayeur discovers a subtle aesthetic zone that blends the political acuity of Vancouver photo-conceptualism with the gorgeous, understated immanence of Thaddeus Holownia and the deadpan absurdity of René Magritte. The artist digitally fuses images from around the globe and inserts elements plucked from the worldwide web to produce affecting, paradoxical images. The forced hybridity of her imagery speaks to the reckless incursion of human habitation on the environment and the erosion of locale, while tweaking our ability to recognize the natural and discern its disruption.

A critical essay by curator Jan Allen and a portfolio of Hayeur's work were featured in the award-winning journal Prefix Photo, #12, in November 2005.
