Baroque Flourishes

Première Series

Samuel J. Zacks Gallery
29 August - 28 November 2004

The Art Centre's collection of Italian drawings is among the most distinguished in the country, and continues to grow steadily through gifts and purchases. As part of its Première series, Baroque Flourishes brought together a selection of 17th-century sheets acquired over the past five years, exhibited here for the first time, including works by the great Baroque masters Guido Reni, Pietro da Cortona and Guglielmo Cortese.

From simple sketches to elaborate studies for major paintings or fresco commissions, these works demonstrated the extraordinary contribution Italian artists made to the art of draftsmanship, and the special vitality and sophistication that characterized Baroque production. Baroque Flourishes also celebrated the tradition of drawing collecting in Canada, and our donors' remarkable generosity in sharing great works of art with us.
